Guardian of Michael Vick's Dogs to Speak at Drexel Law School
WHAT: Rebecca Huss, the court appointed guardian/special master for Michael
Vick's dogs, is speaking at Drexel Law School on Thursday (March 26) about
her role and how she made her determinations about each dog's destiny. A
reception will follow. The event is sponsored by the Drexel Law Student
Animal Legal Defense Fund. The Pennsylvania SPCA, who will be attending as a
guest, will have information on animal cruelty/dog fighting and will bring
several "ambassador" (i.e., friendly) pit bulls who were rescued from
cruelty cases in Philadelphia. The event is free and open to the public.
When: Thursday, March 26, 2009, from 4:00 -6:00 p.m.
Where: The Earle Mack School of Law at Drexel University, Room 140, 3320
Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104
Visuals: Rebecca Huss, Pennsylvania SPCA informational display on animal
cruelty/dog fighting, "ambassador" pit bulls who were rescued from cruelty
cases in Philadelphia
Background: The United States District Court for the Eastern District of
Virginia appointed Rebecca Huss as the guardian/special master of the pit
bulls that were the subject of the dog fighting case against NFL player
Michael Vick. In April of 2007, the Surry County Sheriff's Department seized
53 pit bulls from Vick's home in Virginia. According to the facts set forth
in the plea agreement, dogs on the property were killed and subjected to
violent dog fights. Similar to human victims of abuse, the dogs needed
someone to represent their best interests during litigation. Huss was in
charge of determining whether each dog should be euthanized due to its
inability to interact safely with humans or other animals or given a second
chance at life in a new home.
