Sample Script (Partial) Nueva Creacion Community Visions

1. EXT. WEST KENSINGTON NEIGHBORHOOD - DAY

A rapid montage reveals scenes from the neighborhood. A neighborhood basketball game, people waiting for the bus, and a dog eating rice and beans on a porch. The images begin to get progressively violent, however, as the sounds of sirens and gunshots become prominent. At the end of the montage, a basketball rolls from a playground to a large pile of garbage, and stops in a mud puddle.

The title "Peace in the Goodlands/Paz en Las Buenas Tierras" is written in chalk on the sidewalk.

2. EXT. MEMORIAL MURAL - DAY

Against the backdrop of the mural are candles, wilted flowers, a teddy bear and 40's that have been left behind.

YOUTHS' VOICE-OVER
(Several layered voices)

The Badlands. They call this the Badlands. They call US the Badlands.

3. NEWSCASTS

TV footage mentioning the "The Badlands" as the scene of a recent shooting, drug busts, etc.

4. EXT. MEMORIAL SITE -NIGHT

A mother lays a wreath of flowers in front of the memorial mural.

YOUTH ONE VOICE

They dump garbage here. They dump cars here. But this is my home. You don't have the right to call it the Badlands. I live here.

5. NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS

A montage of newspaper clippings about the neighborhood: toxic dumping, test scores at a local school, a closed factory, police shooting, etc.

The only time it seems we make the news is when something goes bad.

Every time something goes bad, they'll have a sound truck out here filming. When do they ever show the good in our community? How can they call us the Badlands?
